In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla extract, until it becomes a light yellow cream. Blend in the mascarpone cheese in this cream and set aside;
Place the coffee (and the brandy or rum if you decide to use it) in a bowl and quickly dip 12 ladyfingers, one by one, without soaking them too much, and line the bottom of an 8 inch square baking dish;
Cover the soaked ladyfingers with half the cream;
Dip the other 12 ladyfingers in the coffee and make another layer over the cream. Spread the rest of the cream over this second layer;
Cover and chill in refrigerator for at least 2 hours;
Before serving, sprinkle the top with cocoa powder.
