In a heavy soup pot over medium heat, melt the butter;
Add sliced onions and brown slowly and carefully;
Add broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste and simmer until onions are tender;
Toast the bread, butter it and sprinkle generously with the cheese;
Place bread on top of onion soup in large serving pan, place under broiler until cheese melts;
Serve immediately;
This may be served in individual bowls.
Tip: If you don't have a broiler, place the toasted buttered bread with cheese in hot oven until cheese is melted, and then serve on the hot steaming soup.
